If you’re heading down to Malaysia, here are a few 5 day trips that we recommend taking, in order to get the most out of your vacation and understand what this beautiful country is all about! Head to any of these after going out of the Kuala Lumpur Airport and we guarantee you’ll book a second trip to Malaysia as soon as you get back home.

Melaka

This historic coastal city is the first port to be visited by anyone interested in the Malaysian culture and cuisine. It embodies Malaysia’s multicultural history, not only depicting the most common Islamic, Chinese and Indian influences in the country, but also with a rich European history.

The city has gained a strong historical significance after earning the UNESCO World Heritage status, and it is characterized by its fairly small size, which makes it easy to walk through its alleys by foot. It includes the ruins of Portugal’s old fortress of Porta de Santiago and St. Paul’s Church.

Take a 15-minute walk to Kampong Morten in the north of the city during the evening, and discover the houses of the traditional Melaka fishermen. Here you’ll find extremely interesting river wildlife, including lizards and various kinds of fish. The whole area has something magical to it, and it is beautifully lit during the night.

Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary

The only center of its kind in Malaysia, a protected sanctuary for orphaned elephants from Southeast Asia, where they are transported to and looked after. You will have the opportunity to see some rare elephants which you can feed by hand — or even ride. There is also a visitor center with educational videos and detailed information on the important work that is being done here. You can also play with elephants in river water, but be sure to shower after you’re done, as the waters can be fairly dirty.

Fireflies of Kuala Selangor

Fireflies, which are tiny flying beetles, live on mangroves along the Selangor River near Kampung Kuantan. These small creatures create a light in order to attract others and mate. Seeing thousands of natural lights flying around you is a beautiful sight, and this place is one of the best places in the world to see these beautiful creatures. However, you’ll have to keep in mind that taking photos with the flash on is strictly forbidden. You can get there by a two hour ride to the north.

Fraser’s Hill

Some people say that Malaysia resembles Scotland at this small hillside resort called Fraser Hill, named after James Fraser, a Scottish pioneer who mysteriously disappeared after creating a tin-ore trading post in 1890. It rises 1,500 meters above sea level and features an interesting blend of cloud forest and British architecture.

The atmosphere here is cool, with lots of fresh air, and you can enjoy a wide range of outdoor activities that will revitalize your mind and body. If you’re not a big fan of walking, there are rowing boats that you can take on a small lake called Allans, or you can hire some cheap fishing rods.
