Northern Cyprus, with a predominantly Turkish population of about 38% of the island, has some of the most beautiful landscapes in the country among the best beaches and important cultural landmarks in history.

In the past decade, Cyprus has opened the border between the Greek side and the Turkish side. At present, it has been reported that there are some ongoing talks about reunification. Tourists who travel to Cyprus can easily cross from southern Cyprus to northern Cyprus and vice versa, although most are particularly attracted to visit northern Cyprus.

Here you’ll find the most beautiful places to visit in Northern Cyprus and the reason why this part of the island is a worthwhile destination which should be included in your next trip to the Mediterranean Sea.

Famagusta (Gazimağusa)

The ancient town of Famagusta is a magnificent architectural treasure, with beautiful historical ruins offering tourists who arrive here a journey into past times. Among the most important landmarks of the city are Sinan Pasha Mosque, St. Peter’s Basilica, Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque, St. Nicholas Cathedral, the Royal Palace and the Othello Castle. It is a destination with crumbling infrastructure but with stunning natural scenery.

Nicosia (Lefkosa)

Nicosia is the last divided capital in Europe, and an interesting place to explore, especially if you want to understand the complex nature of the relations between the two countries. At present, crossing the border has become very easy (you just walk from one country to the other).

There are lots of things to see in the north of the city. Among the most important tourist attractions are the Buyuk Han, Hamam and Selimiye mosques. However it is easy to see that the southern (Greek) part of the city is more sophisticated and full of hotels, restaurants, shops, bazaars and beautiful parks.

Kyrenia (Girne)

Kyrenia is one of the oldest and most beautiful cities in Cyprus, featuring beautiful cobblestone streets and a historic harbor. The best time to see this place is in the afternoon, when you can take a relaxing stroll around the city.

Bellapais Monastery

The Bellapais Monastery is one of the most beautiful and tranquil places in Northern Cyprus. It was founded at the beginning of the 13th century, quickly gaining attention with its Gothic architecture. The building underwent several modifications over time, the most important part done in the period of King Hugh III.

St Hilarion Castle

St Hilarion Castle is another great place to visit in Northern Cyprus. It is located halfway between Nicosia and Kyrenia, in a picturesque mountain area called Besparmak. Of all three castles located in northern Cyprus (St. Hilarion, Kantara and Buffevento), this seems to be the most well preserved, with its stunning architecture which reminds you of fairy tales. This castle has even fascinated filmmakers who designed world movie scenes here, like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

The St Hilarion Castle is 732 meters high and has a strategic location for observing the route from Kyrenia to Nicosia.

Many places and attractions are worth a visit in Northern Cyprus. Turtle Beach, Bafavento Castle, Karpaz Peninsula and Cantara Castle.
