Peloponnese is probably Greece’s most popular continental region in terms of tourism. Located near Athens, it hosts many beautiful resorts and is a place full of history, with a wealth of ancient cities, museums, monuments and picturesque ports. In addition, prehistoric Peloponnese was one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece, where Olympia, Epidaurus and Mycenae were located.

Last but not least, Peloponnese has many beautiful beaches surrounded by the sea in all directions. The most popular beach areas in the region are Nafplion, Gythio, Pylos și Monemvasia.

Here are some of the reasons why you should visit this part of Greece:

Visiting the Castles. Along the Peloponnese coast many castles and forts were built to defend the area, especially during the Middle Ages. In the coastal city of Methoni, for example, in 1210 the Phoenicians built a large complex, all connected to the mainland by a stone bridge featuring 14 arcades. In Nafplio, you will see the magnificent Palamidi castle that rises above the city, as well as the Koroni and Pylos castles.

To learn more about the distant past of Greece. Go to Olympia to see where the first Olympic Games took place in 776 BC. This magnificent ancient city, with the ruins of the Temple of Zeus to which the games were dedicated, hosted the grand event for 1,000 years.

At the same time, make a stop near Kalamata to visit the remains of a fourth-century town, Messini. Then continue the road to the north, where you will find the Epidaurus sites with its gigantic theater and Mycenae, dating from the Bronze Age. Both Epidaurus and Mycenae are listed in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

To relax at the beach. Any holiday in Greece would be incomplete without going to the beach at least once. Well, there are a variety of beaches in the Peloponnese, but to get to them you will most likely have to rent a car. One of the most beautiful beaches is Voidokilia, which looks like a perfect semicircle surrounded by a wonderful turquoise water. At the same time, Simos Beach on Elafonisis Island is impressive, with a white sand reminiscent of the beaches of Southeast Asia. If you are looking for wildlife beaches less populated by tourists, we suggest going to the beaches of Vathi Gythiou, Kalo Nero or Metamorfosi, where dolphins can often be seen.

For adventure. Featuring a spectacular mountain scenery, crossed by rapid rivers, the Peloponnesian Peninsula offers unparalleled opportunities for adventure lovers. Explore rural areas full of greenery and wild flowers along the mountains that rise above the azure waters of Corinth Bay. Then, experience the rafting thrill on the Styx River, one of the most beautiful rivers in the region, in an idyllic natural setting full of pine forests. The Vouraikos Gorge also abounds in unique hiking opportunities through superb mountain landscapes. The waters of the Vouraikos River course pass through the gorges, climbing along dense vegetation, caves and steep cliffs. Here you will have the opportunity to practice mountain biking and paragliding.
