The pink lakes have a red or pink color due to the presence of algae that produce carotenoids (organic pigments) and Dunaliella Salina (a kind of green algae, mainly found in marine areas).

Because of their pink color, these lakes are becoming increasingly popular among tourists and photographers around the world.

  1. Lake Hiller, Australia

Lake Hillier is a lake on Middle Island, the largest of the islands and islets that make up the Recherche archipelago in western Australia. What distinguishes this lake from the other is its flamboyant color, similar to the one of a pink rose. The color is permanent, not changing even if the water is put into a bowl. The length of the lake is about 600 m (1970 ft). The lake is surrounded by white salt, dense forests, camphor trees and sand dunes that separate the South Lake from the North Ocean. The central island was discovered in this lake in 1812.

  1. Lake Retba, Senegal

Lake Retba is located north of Cape Vert in Senegal, in the northeast of the Dakar region. It got its name because of its pink waters caused by the existence of Dunaliella algae in the water. The color is particularly noticeable during the dry season. The lake is also known for its high salt content, similar to the Dead Sea. The salt collection industry around the lake has been growing recently. Many salt collectors work 6-7 hours a day in the lake, which has a salt content of approximately 40%.

  1. Salina de Torrevieja, Spain

Salina de Torrevieja and La Salina from Mata are the salty lakes that surround Torrevieja – a town in southeastern Spain. The microclimate formed by the two lakes (the largest salty lakes in Europe) was declared to be one of the healthiest in Europe by the World Health Organization. Thanks to the presence of algae and salt, Salina de Torrevieja Lake has a pink look, making it a wonderful view. Like the Dead Sea in Israel, people can easily float on this lake. It is also very healthy for the skin and against lung disease. Salt extracted from factories is exported to many countries. The lake is also known to attract a large number of bird species.

  1. Hutt Lagoon, Australia

Salt Lake is located near the North Coast in the western part of Australia. Its form is rather rectangular, being located near the coast. The city of Grigory is located between the ocean and the south of the lake. The road between Northampton and Kalbarri – George Gray Drive – runs along the western edge. The lake has a length of about 14 km (8.7 miles) along its axis, parallel to the coast. The offshore reaches a distance of about 2 km (1.2 miles). Hutt Lagoon is a salty lake with a red / pink color because of the presence of Dunaliella salina, a source of beta-carotene, a food coloring agent and source of vitamin A.

  1. Dusty Rose Lake, Canada

This pink lake located in Canada is quite unusual, fairly unknown and most definitely unique. The water in this lake is not salty at all and does not contain algae, but it is still pink. In this case, the water comes from the unique composition of the rocks in this region.

  1. Pink Lake – Australia

Pink Lake is a salt lake in the Goldfields-Esperance region of western Australia. It is located about 3 km (2 miles) east of the South Coast highway. The lake is not always pink, but the distinctive color of the water when it appears coloured is because of the Dunaliella salina green algae and the high salt content. BirdLife International declared that the lake is a very important area for birds.
