Lisbon is one of the best places to visit in Europe. As the second largest city in Portugal, there is no doubt that it should be part of your plan to travel to Portugal. Lisbon is also ranked 15th among the best cities in Europe this year.

Don’t forget to also visit Porto

Both cities (Lisbon and Porto) offer a unique experience that would require a trip of more than just a few days, but if the visit is limited to the weekend you should choose the city that will leave the greatest impression in the shortest possible time. Since Porto is smaller, it is easier to experience if the duration of your trip is limited. It has many beautiful bridges, a unique sunset view, and many attractions close to each other that can be visited by foot.

Porto is the best choice for a true Portuguese experience

The city of Porto has the most authentic Portugal charm. The capital on the other hand, Lisbon, is a larger city with many tourism opportunities and attracts travelers from all over the world, and provides all the necessary services to make tourists feel welcome. English is spoken everywhere and some neighborhoods like Martem Muniz are known for their diverse and multicultural nature. Porto is also very welcoming, and many locals speak fluent English, but the Portuguese culture definitely plays a larger part in Porto than in the capital.

Dom Luis is an ancient bridge that attracts many photographers, offering a beautiful sight over the city and over the Douro River.

Portugal, generally speaking, is an excellent destination for gastronomy but the Porto meals surely attract more attention. Known for its harmonious food, the city features classics such as Coizo and the famous Francesinha Sandwich. Porto is also the place for the world’s most famous wine experience.

The charming old roads of the nearby Ribeira neighborhood are filled with romance around every corner. Although Lisbon is a beautiful city, Porto is more relaxed and makes for a great place to enjoy Portuguese dishes and cold drinks on the river banks. Ribeira is also a wonderful place to watch the stunning sunset, as well as Crystal Palace Gardens, Porto Cathedral and the Clérigos Tower.

One of the most beautiful bookstores in the world

Book lovers will fall in love immediately with the Lello Library, with its Gothic architecture and the strong connection with Harry Potter writer JK Rowling, the library is an important factor in attracting tourists to Porto. Although Lisbon has the Bertrand Library (the oldest operating library of the world), the Lello Library in Porto is often considered more popular.

Porto locals are more friendly than those in Lisbon

The inhabitants of both cities are incredibly friendly, but Porto has the charm of a small town. When you ask for assistance in finding a route, the local people in Porto will usually not only tell you how to get there, but may also come along with you and show you around!
